Who you callin' a "Fat Quarter"?

You may have noticed on the right side of my blog there is a link for National Tie One On Day. I will be organizing a Saturday sewing day at our church for any of the ladies that would like to sew an apron to give away on November 24th. I found a great free online PDF file for this apron that takes less than a yard of fabric and less than 1 hour to sew! I wanted to be sure that this apron would be a good first project for the ladies that are new to sewing as well as be an apron they'd be proud to give as a gift. I timed myself and from cutting to finishing it only took 45 minutes! The pattern calls for 1/2 yd of one fabric and a "fat quarter" of another. I'll admit that I had to google the term "fat quarter". I think I've mentioned before that I am not a quilter.....and clearly quilters have some secret terms all their own. Turns out that a fat quarter is a piece of fabric that measures 18" x 22" ( 1/2 of a 1/2 yard rectangle). Who knew? So after 41 years of sewing, once again I've learned something new :) When I saw this pattern I was concerned that it wouldn't fit someone of ample stature, such as myself...but it totally does! Both fabrics I used are from the Dill Blossom collection by Robert Kaufman. It was only $3.98 a yd at M & L Yardage. This apron cost less than $4.00 to make and I still have enough of the base fabric to make another one! That's one big FAT deal!

  1. I like it!!! Not a blue person, but the flower with the stripe works. You want me to send a bunch of fat quarters? I am not into quilting as much anymore and I would be happy to donate to your cause. I think I have some tea fabric with a red background...know anyone who would use it???

  3. I told you that I live in my overalls :) I am actually planning a gardening apron from a recycled pair of overalls. As soon as I have time that is :) I realized that I don't have any aprons that I made either except for the red sunflower one that I made while I was waiting for my partner info. We'd love to have the fat quarters for this project! That is so sweet of you to donate them. We probably won't have more than 10 women. We are a very small church. Thanks again!

  4. What kinds of prints do you want? Subtle or goofy? Kid prints? I've got bunches! I just donated a whole stack to a 6th grade teacher who is teaching her homeroom to sew because, get this, she isn't allowed to ''teach'' anything in home room. 25 instructional minutes totally wasted. Sounds like I need to get in touch with the school board again. Even tho it's probably the teachers' union's doing.

  7. I have some fat quarters I can send your way. Or even an apron or two if you need it. I use that pattern a lot just so I have them on hand for hostess gifts.

  8. Amy.....what ever you wanted to donate would be awesome! We are a very small church, so I'm not expecting more than maybe 8 or 10 women. Some of them will be sewing for the first time, so I'll enlist my mom to help out too :) That reminds me, I need to get busy and get the flyers done....
